Rare Disease Day has been held annually on the last day of February since 2008 – approaching its 14-year anniversary and underlining the incredible efforts of the rare disease community. Traditionally, Rare Disease Day shines a spotlight on the extraordinary challenges posed by these often serious and hereditary conditions – raising awareness amongst healthcare provides, policymakers, and the general public. This year, on February 28th, Rare Disease Day events around the world will focus on the specific obstacles rare disease patients have been facing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
With our Rare Disease Day Virtual Conference and the International Rare Disease Filmfestival, CENTOGENE is proud to be supporting this day by raising awareness, drawing attention to the unique challenges those affected by rare diseases face, and discussing potential solutions.
At the beginning of the two-part event, the virtual conference is entirely dedicated to the exchange of knowledge and insights. Experts from around the world will discuss the impact of the pandemic on various facets of patients’ lives, as well as on research. Furthermore, the conference will serve as a platform to highlight the potential for innovation in international diagnostics and research collaboration, as well as the benefits for those affected, with a focus on Pakistan.
The second part of the day will feature a change of perspective – using film to give attendees a glimpse into the inspiring lives of the rare disease community. The International Rare Disease Filmfestival 2021 aims to raise awareness of the lives and challenges of rare disease patients. Not only will it address the immense challenges posed by the diseases, but also highlight the remarkable moments of freedom and self-empowerment. In total, nearly 3,000 film entries from 120 countries were submitted. The finalists’ works, selected by a jury of renowned film experts, will be presented at the festival, and can be viewed on demand via an online platform for the entire month of March.
The conference and film festival will be broadcast in English with simultaneous translations in German and Spanish.
